Google Demand Gen’s September Update: What to Check Before Launch

A shorter path from an ad to your website puts more pressure on the page that follows. Before expanding a Demand Gen campaign, make sure the creative, destination and conversion event tell the same story.

In its September 24 announcement, Google introduced single-tap landing-page visits from image ads on YouTube Shorts and Gmail. For the Shorts experience, Google specifies full-bleed 9:16 image uploads. Those are the platform changes. The checks below are our recommendations for putting them to work.

Build the vertical version deliberately

Start with the offer you want someone to understand. Then build a vertical composition around it. Shrinking a landscape ad into a portrait canvas can leave the product too small, the headline difficult to read or the call to action disconnected from the message.

Review the actual ad preview at phone size. Can you identify the product or service immediately? Is the main claim readable without zooming? Does the image still make sense when interface elements appear around it? Have someone who did not design the ad describe what they expect to find after tapping.

Keep the original files and name each variation clearly. A record of the offer, image version and destination will make it easier to explain results later. Check the requirements shown in your account before uploading; do not assume one export suits every placement.

Follow the tap all the way through

Open the intended destination on a real phone. The first screen should continue the promise in the ad and make the next action easy to find. Check that the offer is current, the product is available where relevant, and the page gives people enough information to proceed.

For a hypothetical consultation campaign, an ad offering a campaign review should land on a page explaining that review: what it covers, who it is for and what happens after a request. A general homepage that makes visitors search for those answers adds unnecessary work.

Complete the journey using an approved test submission or test checkout. Check fields, validation messages and the confirmation step. Look for cookie notices, pop-ups or sticky elements that cover the form on smaller screens. Test the full destination URL, including the tracking parameters you intend to use, and inspect any redirects.

Verify what counts as a result

Write down the business outcome before reviewing the dashboard. A completed purchase, a submitted inquiry and a visit to a contact page answer different questions. Confirm that the campaign's selected conversion goals reflect its purpose.

For a lead form, check whether the event represents a successful submission rather than a tap on the submit button. Confirm that one submission does not accidentally trigger duplicate implementations. Where your process supports it, connect the inquiry to a later quality assessment so the team can distinguish volume from useful demand.

Our Google Ads conversion-goal audit explains how to review the relevant settings. Resolve measurement problems before using a change in reported conversions to judge the new creative.

Keep the first review interpretable

Save the starting configuration: creative, destination, budget, goals and launch date. Record what changed and why. If you also replace the offer, rebuild the page and change the bidding objective, the next report will describe that combined change. It will not isolate the effect of the new ad experience.

Set the review timing around your conversion delay and the amount of evidence available. Monitor delivery and technical issues early, then assess business outcomes once they have had time to develop. A rise in visits alone does not establish that the campaign is producing better customers.

Before launch, the team should be able to show five things: a readable vertical ad, a matching mobile destination, a working completion flow, a verified conversion event and a documented review plan.
